This painting of Chase is based upon the genre of sporting dog paintings done starting around 1890 and later. This period of canine art is best known for portraying the structure of the dog accurately and in an environment appropriate to his specific use as a sporting dog.
The background is historically accurate for the painting and is typical of the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland, which provides a haven for all sorts of wildlife, including lots of wild geese and ducks. It is also the area where Charles LeBoutillier, Frances Fisher, and a few others began the revival of poodles as working retrievers.
I have, however, chosen to represent Chase in a modern version of the working contintental, with placement of bracelets and jacket determined by modern standards rather than what would have been normal for a poodle in the early 1900 period.
Prints in two sizes are available. |
